The Diez shelf

Diez is a shelf made from wooden battens.

The battens are assembled using four threaded rods. The spacing between them is designed to allow clothing or objects to be hung.

Two recessed imprints are incorporated to cradle the shape of objects placed on top.

Inspired by the shape of a sharp sign (♯), the shelf is fully customizable. The nuts at the back can be adjusted to make the shelf straighter or to accentuate its form. The shelf can also be mounted in two different orientations.

To create this shelf, I first used a CNC machine to carve two recessed imprints into the wood.

I then cut the wooden battens using a table saw and drilled two holes into each batten to insert the threaded rods.

Using a milling machine, I rounded the edges of the battens, after which each piece was sanded by hand.

The final step involved cutting the threaded rods to size and assembling them to connect and suspend all the battens together.
