The Rengo collection

Rengo is an elegant and timeless collection.

Duality is expressed through the choice of materials: wood (a noble material) and concrete (a more utilitarian construction material).

With a Japanese-inspired design, the collection reflects the refined character of the city of Kyoto.

I chose to produce one of the lamps from the collection. I began by creating the mold using melamine-coated wood panels and PVC. A CNC machine was used to trace the lamp’s shape into the wood, creating precise slots for the PVC elements.

I then poured the concrete, made from grey cement, sand, and water. During the pouring process, I added metal mesh to reinforce and strengthen the lamp.

For the wooden component, I first cut a rough shape using a table saw. The next step involved rasping and filing the wood to achieve the desired form. I then used the table saw to create the opening beneath the wooden piece, followed by drilling to install the light socket.

The final step was sanding and waxing both the wood and the concrete to complete the piece.
